Performance Space Queer Development Program 2017 Open For Applications

By Mikey Carr

Great news for any up and coming queer performers out there as Performance Space has just announced that their Queer Development Program 2017 is open for applications.

A suite of three initiatives, the program brings emerging and established artists together to promote and support the expression of queer identities through performance. Successful applicants will be given the chance to refine their work and their skills with the program’s mentors and facilitators, as well as the opportunity to perform at the Queer Performance Party that wraps up the program.

The first initiative open for application is the Stephen Cummins Residency, a two week mentored program that gives artists the chance to make significant strides towards staging a new work. Supported technically and with a fee provided for the successful applicant (free money!), the residency will take place at the PACT Centre for Emerging Artists from Tuesday 7th – Saturday 18th March.

Next up is the Stephen Cummins Workshop Intensive, which is a skills development initiative created to support and further queer creativity and performance in Sydney. Consisting of six workshops over five-days, the program is led by experienced facilitators and will introduce successful applicants to a wide range of performative work methodologies that explore queer identities. This one will also take place at PACT Centre for Emerging Artists this time from Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th March. Applications for both programs are due by midnight, Monday 6 February, 2017

The third strand of the program is the aforementioned Queer Performance Party. Featuring the successful applicants from the Stephen Cummins Residnecy and Workshop Intensive showcasing their works and newly polished skills however, you can’t apply to perform at the party directly. You can however purchase tickets to enjoy the performances (with all proceeds going to support the program) which will take place on Saturday the 25th of March, with tickets on sale soon.

In the meantime though, why not check out some highlights from last year’s program here.
